I was just looking through allelectronics and I found this http://www.allelectronics.com/index.php?page=item&id=PJT-7&extra=a%3A2%3A. Could you put this on top of the GPU and then put the GPU heatsink on top? It would be an epic cooling solution.

I have been experimenting with peltier coolers for a while now and unfortunately there is no real or efficient or worthwhile way of applying one to a xbox.

it is basically the law of conservation of energy in work. And another law I cant think of. When the current passes through it draws electrons from one side and deposits them on the other side. hence cooling one side and heating the other.

there's a writeup on it on wiki that's accurate, there's a lot more to it, this is just a condensed version.

Yeah exactly, but why can't you apply that to an xbox? is it just impossible to cool the pad enough? oh...do you mean actually putting it on the chip? I'm asking so many questions haha.

How much do you think the hot side of the pad would get up to, and how cold the chip could stay if one was theoretically placed on the GPU?

well it all depends as to how much energy (heat) is being removed from the hot side. Theoretically speaking, left alone with no heat applied to the cool side it would get well below freezing. I never said it couldn't be done, it just isn't really worth it. Its just a way of bragging Very Happy

then you have to get a heat sink designed for the peliter....witch wont fit under the dvd drive, you'll need to go external with that. Thats where it gets expensive.

Could always build your own, scavenge some heat pipes or something. I have 2 pelters and I did plan to try to fit them on an Xbox, but I never got around to it.

exactly, but when I tried this it never ended up really cooling it to the point where it was reasonable.....worldformula; remember these are more of energy transfers, they don't dissipate the heat magically, you can only cool one side as much as you heat the other. and the other can only be heated so much without the heat being dissipated. That is why the take fine tuning to fine the right ratio of volts to feed it...etc.

Well I'm just looking at it to get the heat off the chip and the mobo...but couldn't you just stick the normal GPU heatsink on top of it and screw it down? The heatsink is wider and longer(oh wow)

that heatsink can barely cool the chip off itself, let alone with a peltier creating more heat...

people generally see peltiers and think they're this magical thing that makes things cold, when in reality they are rarely used because of there lack of efficiency and high power intake, not to mention why spend money on something that probably is going to work any better, if not worse Sad

Im just saying, unless you have lots of money and time its not worth it. Feel free to go for it though.

Well thats what I thought at first...that I couldn't cool it off well enough. But wouldn't a blower fan be able to cool the heatsink down enough to at least survive? Its not a very big pad. And I could connect it to a 5v source I think.

Well wouldn't it keep the heat off the chip though? It seems like it would act like a super effective thermal grease.

The same heatsink also wouldn't be able to keep the TEc cool enough either.

What he's trying to get at is that your could cool it more but only if you could pull more heat off the TEC. If you could pull more heat off the TEC then you could just apply that directly to your CPU/GPU and skip the TEC all together. Thus eliminating the need for one.

Basically, your better off trying to design a heatsink that fits in the Xbox that will cool the GPU effectively. Since your just gonna have to do it anyway for the TEC.

Haha wow I failed. So basically its just thermal paste that is powered by electricity? What I was thinking is that the pad could simply heat the heatsink up to whatever just so the board and chip stayed cool. I guess the heatsink can only hold so much heat.

this is EXACTLY what i said about 4 post ago, there not some magical thing, all they do is take power...there is no REAL benefit. You would have to cool it more than the gpu alone to get any decent results.

Its ok, everyone always thinks that at first. Wink
